Jungle Song

Jungle Song

In one of those far off lying lands
beyond the hills and the ocean
a jungle  grows in mist and rain
-silent and dark - filled with bands
of creatures where the sunbeams wane.

When I was just a little girl
this side of the hills and the ocean
I lived my noisy, busy ways
-happily as in a whirl-
cared for through all the days.

But once at night my bed took me out
across the hills  and the ocean.
And when it settled under a tree
I shivered with cold by a wet cloud.
I longed just to be free.

Yet – I was free to do what I’d chose
that night behind the ocean.
I chose to stay in bed and pull
the pillow  over my ear. Wet and loose
hung lianas down. The moon was full.

From among the trees the wild beasts came
in that jungle far from the ocean
near to my bed to show their teeth
snarling. – But soon they all went tame
by spell  of a moonlit spot beneath.

The tiger purred and licked my face
in the woods beyond the ocean.
He promised to do not any harm
if only I came nearer a pace
and take him tenderly in my arm.

I did and stroked the tiger’s neck
behind the hills and the ocean.
I fondly kissed him on his nose
and was allowed to ride on his back.
An ape gave me a rose.

We feasted and sang the jungle song
through the night behind the ocean,
we roamed till we came to the woodland’s bend.
There suddenly banged a very loud gong.
The sun streamed into my room to end
the happy night
with daily light.
