A GONDOLA AT THE ANCHOR

I feel like a gondola at the anchor
that relies on the sea's caresses
at dawn's break.
I float, chained to life,
dreaming of moments that never again
perhaps will live.
I am a disharmonious Venetian rondo.
A sea volcano burns in my heart,
crisped by the sun's rays,
it dies, yet newly born.
My heart is a gypsy flamenco
that transforms the pain into poetry.
My heart and I are two lonely wayfarers
who seek new stars.
We two astray travelers
know the soreness of love
desire a fresh universe,
with unique emotions
Weeping and loneliness are our companions,
and an illusion gives us
the strength to live together,
today, in the deserted lagoon,
tomorrow in the sky,
in the desire for happiness.
In my eyes is the sparkle of honesty
that takes flight at the first smile of the dawn.
I am nothing more than a heap of dreams
and bitter memories.
I am a lost hologram on a silver cove
under the moon of San Marco.
You are a memory,
a firmament quilted with love.
You are the silent heart
that listens to my words.
You and I are two wounded lovers
searching for paradise and a new love song.
We understand the weeping,
the loneliness, and the caresses
that made us live.
You and I,
we went through pain,
yearning and melancholy.
Little time has passed
and yet, everything speaks of you,
whereas there is no longer your smile
to inspire new poems,
other words of love.
I would like to let myself go
to a cry of liberation,
but fate, even this, denies me tonight.
Yearning and melancholy
surround me.
An indifferent wayfarer
would see only your
reflected sparkle
in my eyes,
for despair and sorrow
exist near me.
The stars are in delirium for us,
but then they weep
because you are not there.
I seek your lips, but the moon mocks me.
The same moon that so many nights
has seen you embracing me.
Nevertheless,
tonight,
thou art not there.
I greeted a white halcyon
that was taking its nightly flight.
Blissful, he over the lagoon.
This lagoon was a dream
when you were there.
This lagoon is now a sad Venetian rondo
because you are not with me.
You,
the wonderful love
of a dream in Venice.
