Justine Knolle

I bend my head,
And watch my every tread,
For this helps me to avoid thinking.

I enter the room
Where the men are all drinking,
Their voices coarse,
Their glasses clinking.
I descend the steps,
Approach the bar,
Order a Schwepps,
And go up for a bath.
I have no desire
For the company of drunks,
Shadowed men, or ladies for hire.
I prefer the solitude of this forsaken place,
Where the only familiarity
Is in the mirror:
The reflection of my face.
The water is cool,
And soothes my sunburnt skin.
The whirl of the ceiling fan
Softens the raucous din.
I slide into the soapsuds,
All the way down to my chin.
My thoughts drift far away
To a land of silken veils.
Tomorrow I will find a ship
That will take me there, with swifting sails.
There I’ll seek and find my fortune.

Oh, let tomorrow come, I pray,
But not over soon.
