Grotti, the Magic Mill
In Gotland, in the days of old,
A mighty king ruled strong and bold
King Frodi bought two women fair,
With giant strength beyond compare
And with them came a wondrous mill,
That granted wishes, every will
Just whisper softly what you crave,
And Grotti ground what you would wave
All day and night they had to work,
to grind and toil as mindless jerk
all wishes of the king's desire
His fame and wealth got daily higher
But all desires had a cost:
The women’s joy and strength got lost
Their lives were drained for might and ease,
They had to toll without release
The king cared not for what they bore
Just a few breath, the wheel could rest,
Then Menja, Fenja, churned once more
and turned the wheel, the endless quest
He reached for more, could not refrain,
The mill must grind, again, again!
It groaned beneath the greedy pace,
Yet Frodi urged a faster race
The giant maids, in silent night,
sang songs of sorrow, pain, and fight
They poured their grief into the stone,
And Grotti heard their aching tone
It ground their wishes, deep and true:
The wrongs they suffered, justice due
They sang of greed that had no end -
And justice came, not to defend
An army came, the king was slain,
The mill was seized, and with it gain
They loaded Grotti on a ship,
with treasures from the royal grip
The ruler now demanded salt
Grotti obeyed without a halt
It ground and ground, without a pause,
Until the ship sank from the cause
No one has ever stopped the spell
The mill lies deep where oceans swell
And Grotti grinds beneath the sea,
Salting the waters endlessly
