Echos that fade unheard

We are the last ones stripped of freedom,
Before us, many in gulags have succumbed.
The world will listen when explosions sound
But not to those whose cries are drowned.

We speak whatever comes to tongue,
While others are cursed since life’s begun.
Who has nothing has no strength to cry,
And no one helps, no one lends a try.

Those who sit low feel no sun on their face,
That shatters on towers in glittering space.
The filthy rain that reaches down there
Brings, understandably, no comfort or care.

“These times can’t worsen,” some declare,
As if they’re already prepared to despair.
Yet forward we move, again and again
Though burdened, though joyless, though laden with pain.
