Jacob Kapp

The Road

He went along the road  ,

not bearing in mind where to it might lead   ,

of the horizon taking absolutely no heed  .

Thus he just walked, tread after tread  ,

with no regard for any consequence  ,

nor with any dread  .

The road spread into the woods long and wide

its far off end the forest seems to hide  .

On he went with no lead or sign in view  ,

beginning to think what afterwards he should do  .

Lo, to the end he has arrived  .

But can from that any happiness be derived  ?

Was this the end for which he had aspired  ?

Is that the end he has always admired  ?

He now turns his head backwards in regret  ,

Where he came from he shall never forget  .

But, alas, night falls upon the road  ,

upon which until now he quickly trod  .

Coming back is an option long gone  .

His destiny from now on is sealed and done  .
