Fergal Dunne

City View

Monday morning 10am

The sun doesn’t break through,

Depressed,

Carrying weights

That are in excess

Your minds a mess,

And your hair is too.

Coffee mug, ashtray, mobile phone

Empty wine bottle

Take-away you could not afford.

Yesterdays newspaper recounts more job losses

Your chances cut again by half.

Government percentages

Make you laugh.

Rented room with London view,

You never look at anyway.

Relationships that flip and fade

Made impossible by no pay.

Placebo and Nirvana your only friends

And their words make amends

For all that is not right,

You wish

That it may come to light

That you are not meant for this

But then who is?

The strongest find a way

The weak cannot tread water,

No strength left to swim

Against modern ruthless city slaughter.

Monday afternoon 2pm

No job search done

Glance at city view - still no sun

One more cigarette,

I’ll watch Scrubs

Its much more fun.
