Late Summer’s Day
Late summer’s sun burns down with brilliant beams
but in the park to me it seems
a touch of fall is mingling in the air.
The trees gleam green and green still is the grass,
rosebushes bloom along the paths,
and yet – decay’s beginning light and fair.
First leaves are tumbling loose out of a tree,
a spider’s web is hanging free
passing my face as I am bending low
to take a fallen petal in my hand.
Its brittleness shows me the end
of growing and the year’s decline to snow.

In Krollebolles Reich: Märchen
