Refugee Children at the Airport
 
 
Like the whale
that swallowed Jonah
only to release him
to further calamities
this whale of the air
spits out
among hurrying businessmen
and excited tourists
slowly moving
dark-eyed children.
 
 
Hand in hand
they look into
the unknown misty sky
and up to strangers.
They tread the concrete
unaccompanied,
not one the other’s
brother or sister.
 
Strangers meet them,
speak to them in harsh voices
asking too many questions
in unfamiliar tongues.
 
Eventually
their reserve and bravery break.
They sob. They feel
a dark future lying before them.
This they fear more
than revolution, bombs
and terror at home.
